The Tokachi Plain, where a variety of crops such as vegetables and grains grow, is full of fun things to do, including rich food and sweets, dynamic landscapes, lush gardens, and rare “moor hot springs”!
We will introduce the highlights of Tokachi and Obihiro, as well as information on how to get there using public transportation!

Sightseeing Spots

Shikaribetsuko Kotan

Located within Daisetsuzan National Park, Lake Shikaribetsu is known as the lake with the highest elevation in Hokkaido (810m).
In the summer, you can enjoy nature experiences such as canoeing, and in the winter when the lake is covered in ice, the “Shikaribetsuko Kotan” event is held every year, and an ice village
You can enjoy hot springs at the hotel located on the lakeside.

Taushubetsu River Bridge

Lake Nukabira is located in the mountains of Kamishihoro Town in northern Tokachi.
The Nukabira hot spring area, which has abundant hot water, spreads out along the lakeside, and a ski resort is also open in the winter.
Also over the lake is the Taushubetsu River Bridge, an arch bridge of the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line, which can be seen from winter through to spring when the water level is low.

Gardens in Tokachi and Obihiro

The Tokachi area is dotted with beautiful gardens.
In addition to Manabe Garden and Shishiku Garden, both located on the outskirts of Obihiro city, you can enjoy beautiful gardens born from Hokkaido’s abundant nature at five other gardens: Tokachi Hills, Rokka no Mori, and Tokachi Millennium Forest.

Ikeda Wine Castle

Ikeda Wine Castle is located in Ikeda Town, in the eastern part of the Tokachi Plain, on a hill overlooking the Tokachi Plain.
This is the winery of Tokachi Wine, the oldest in Hokkaido, and offers tours of the brewery, a restaurant with a panoramic view of Tokachi, and a shop with a wide selection of wines, where you can enjoy tours, tastings, and shopping.

Hot spring

Tokachigawa Hot Springs

Tokachigawa Onsen, located next to Obihiro City along the Tokachi River, is one of Hokkaido’s leading hot spring areas, home to the rare “moor spring” spring water.
There are many accommodation facilities scattered around the area, as well as roadside stations with day-use hot springs and vast parks.
In winter, the illumination event “Sairinka” is held, attracting many tourists.

Hot springs in Obihiro city

Obihiro City, located in the center of the Tokachi Plain, is actually a treasure trove of hot springs.
You can enjoy hot springs at the public baths scattered throughout the city, and many hotels also have large hot spring baths, so you can easily enjoy the “moor hot springs” that are unique to Tokachi.
In recent years, the number of facilities with distinctive saunas has also increased.

Walking around Obihiro and sightseeing spots

Tokachi Banei Horse Racing

Tokachi Banei Horse Racing is the only horse race in the world where racehorses compete for strength and speed while pulling heavy sleds. It is held every weekend except from late March to mid-April at Obihiro Racecourse.You can casually enjoy the thrilling Banei horse racing.
And you can also enjoy shopping for local agricultural products and dining at Tokachimura, located next to the racecourse.

Sweets round trip

Tokachi, one of Japan’s leading agricultural producing regions, is actually a treasure trove of sweets.
There are many famous confectionery shops and ice cream stores scattered around the area, including Rokkatei,famous for their Marusei Butter Sandwich, one of Hokkaido’s most famous sweets, and Ryugetsu,where you can enjoy a variety of unique sweets.

Kita no Yatai

A food stall village with about 20 shops where you can enjoy delicious gourmet food made with local ingredients along with alcohol.
You can enjoy an experience unique to Tokachi and Obihiro, tasting unique meals while chatting with the owner and customers at small restaurants.

Basha BAR

Hotel Nupka is a 3-minute walk from Obihiro Station.
From in front of the hotel, you can take a horse-drawn carriage tour around the city center in about 50 minutes, and enjoy craft beer made with local ingredients.

The “Visit Tokachi Pass” allows unlimited use of local buses (Tokachi Bus, Hokkaido Takushoku Bus) operating in the Tokachi area, and is a great value free pass available to people other than those who reside in the Tokachi area.
